VAT at 17.5% is charged on most goods and
services within the UK and is usually
incorporated within the price on display. VAT is
administered nationally by H.M Customs & Excise
. There are no local sales taxes in the UK.
VAT is not charged on certain items such as food
(except in a restaurant), books, public
transport and children's clothes. However
businesses with a turnover of less than £52,000
per annum do not have to charge VAT for their
goods or services.
Self employed people can reclaim VAT paid on
goods and services bought for business use
provided they themselves are registered for VAT.
If you are a citizen of a country other than a
member of the European Union and you visit the
UK you can reclaim a substantial proportion of
VAT that you paid back from Customs & Excise.
